About American Born Chinese

Based on the 2006 graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang, American Born Chinese is an upcoming action comedy television series.

On October 4, 2021, it was announced that Disney+ is going for an adaptation of the Gene Luen Yang graphic novel for the upcoming series, with Destin Daniel Cretton directing and Charles Yu and Kelvin Yu writing the series. Lucy Liu confirmed she is a director on the series. Filming began in Los Angeles in February 2022.

The storyline follows Jin Wang who is struggling with his school life and home life. He struggles with his identity in a predominantly white American culture. He meets the new foreign exchange student at his school. He has gotten involved in a battle between Gods of Chinese mythology.

The most predominant Gods is a character called “The Monkey King.” He was first introduced to Chinese folklore in the 16th-century novel, Journey to the West. There is one of the tales about this Monkey King that tells the story about The Monkey King doesn’t accept himself in his physical form.

He begins to change his appearance into a human form but gets trapped in a cave in a mountain. A friend of him gives him advice to accept his original form. Now The Monkey King reverts to his original appearance size, he can able to escape his rocky prison.
